One of the main roles of the Students’ Union and particularly the Executive Officer team is to run campaigns that raise student awareness of various issues or represent their views on them. The feedback the Officers get from campaigns often helps them decide the issues they need to lobby senior figures at the University about. Health and Safety campaigns Every year the SU runs campaigns, led by the Campaigns and Welfare Officer and often in partnership with agencies like the Police, NHS and Fire Service which are designed to help students stay safe and healthy while at University. This covers everything from eating well and drinking sensibly through to regularly being tested for Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) or staying safe out on the road. Education campaigns We’re always keen to find out more about the quality of academic experience students at Teesside are enjoying. We regularly run campaigns gathering their views on the quality of academic teaching, support and feedback they receive from the University. Democratic campaigns The SU is led by students for students and we’re always working to get more students involved in student democracy. We always play a full and active role in National Union of Students (NUS) campaigns and run various initiatives ourselves to raise student awareness of and participation in democracy. Environmental campaigns The SU takes our social responsibilities very seriously and we’re continually working to make the building and our day to day working practices as environmentally sound as possible. This was proved by our success at the Green Impact Awards 2011 where we picked up a silver. The national award scheme recognises good environmental practice in the work place and campaigns to raise environmental awareness amongst students. As part of our environmental campaigning we encourage students to be as green as they can through recycling, sharing vehicles where they can and saving energy wherever possible.
