Welcome From The Student Officers

A warm welcome to the fourth newsletter of the year from Teesside University Students’ Union (TUSU), we’re going to be in touch regularly with all the latest news and events from the SU unless you ask us to stop by unsubscribing.

It’s slightly difficult to believe it but we’ve almost reached the end of this calendar year and it’s just a few days until you hopefully start a well-earned break! We’ve got details of the TUSU opening hours from the end of this week to 2nd January further in this newsletter. We’ve also got some top tips to help you stay safe and protect your property over the festive period.

We’re looking back on another very successful Annual General Meeting (AGM) where 364 of you came along to hear from us about our plans and had your say on proposed changes to our constitution and bye-laws. We’re delighted so many of you made it and thrilled you supported our proposal to restructure the Student Officer team to three people holding the titles of President Education, President Activities and President Welfare.

We’re also looking forward to plenty of festive fun this week including the release of “TUSU Wonderland” our Christmas song and video. Please be kind about our incredible vocals if you’re commenting on social media : - ) and, if you can, make a small donation to Papyrus after listening to and downloading it! There’s also the epic end of term/ Christmas classic The Festive Fling to enjoy on Fri, 15thDecember, don’t miss it!

Whether you celebrate Christmas or not we hope you have a safe, happy and relaxing holiday. We look forward to seeing you all again in the New Year : - )

"TUSU Wonderland”…Watch, listen and donate now!

When the previous Student Officer team recorded and treat the world to TUSU Thrills in September 2016 it seemed the musical bar had been set so high it could never be surpassed. However, your current team Tom Platt (President Education), Amy Preston (President Activities) and Georgina Arksey (President Welfare) accepted the challenge, penned some lyrics and practised their vocal gymnastics! They then got themselves in to the studio and in front of the green screen, we’re confident you’ll agree they have come up with a new Christmas classic based on an old favourite.

You can watch, listen to and download “TUSU Wonderland” now by clicking here! All feedback welcome (though they’d rather you were nice) and if you’re feeling extra charitable why not download the track from that page? You can watch, listen to and download “TUSU Wonderland” now by clicking here! All feedback welcome (though we’d rather you were nice) and if you’re feeling extra charitable why not make a small donation to a great cause once you’ve listened to and downloaded the track?

364 students give their approval at Annual General Meeting (AGM)

The TUSU AGM took place on Tue, 21st November and offered students the chance to hear from the Student Officers about their progress in office so far and plans for the year ahead. They also got to have their say about our accounts including who audits them, the way we run our elections, the organisations we affiliate to and a proposal to restructure and improve efficiency within the Student Officer team. The vast majority of those voting (over 95%) agreed with a proposal from the Officers to cut the team down to three. The proposal gives them equal responsibility as President Education, President Activities and President Welfare while making them all more accountable, that change has taken immediate effect. You can read minutes from the meeting, check out pictures and watch a full video of proceedings by clicking here.

Fancy speaking up for every student next year? Want to get paid to lead your SU?

The SU is led by students for students and every year ANY STUDENT* can run in our elections to find the next three Student Officers and next 4 NUS Conference Reps.

Student Officers get paid over £20,000 per year to work full-time for at least 12 months (Starting July 2018) with responsibilities including…

  • Overseeing the running of the SU
  • Leading on key campaigns
  • Speaking up for all students to the most senior figures at the Uni

NUS Conference Reps attend the National Union of Students (NUS) Annual Conference (27th to 29th March 2018 at The Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre in Glasgow). You’ll represent all Teesside Uni students and vote on the key issues debated there, it’s a small commitment of just 3 days and most expenses are paid by the SU. Just running in the elections is an amazing experience and a great chance to build new skills and if you’re elected you can make a real difference for all students, have lots of fun and boost your long term employability.

The elections open on Mon, 29th January 2018 and there’s a wealth of general info, key dates and downloads available from You can also fix up a time to speak to current Student Officers about their roles by e-mailing:

Do you love it? Tell us about your student life…you could win £500*

Student Opinion Counts (SOC) is the biggest and most influential piece of research that the Students’ Union carries out. The short, simple surveys cover everything from your student experience and the challenges you face through to the events, social spaces, support and activities provided by the SU. The feedback makes a BIG difference as it’s used by the Student Officers and staff to identify the areas YOU want us to focus on in the year ahead and which areas of the SU we need to improve as a priority. You could win anything from £100 for completing one of the surveys through to £500 if you complete all of them. Find out more and complete the surveys at

Calling final year students! Have your say about your student experience!

The National Student Survey (NSS) is one of the biggest student surveys around. Opening in early 2018, it’s a chance for final year students to tell Teesside Uni and the SU where we got it right and the places where you think we need to improve for future students. To encourage you to complete the survey, Teesside University is offering the following prize: 1 x £1,500 discount off full-time, further study at the Teesside University main campus in 2018/19 to be awarded randomly to a student who enters the online survey prize draw before midnight on 30 April 2018.
