Welcome From The Student Officers

A warm welcome to the eighth newsletter of the year from Teesside University Students’ Union, we’re going to be getting in touch every month this academic year unless you ask us to stop by unsubscribing.

We hope everyone had a great spring break and we wish you the very best of luck with any assignment deadlines or exams you have coming up over the next few weeks. We know it’s easier said than done but try not to get too stressed out, we’ve got some handy info in Campaigns Corner about how we can help with this.

This month we’re particularly looking forward to the one and only Final Fling and we hope you are too! Our epic 14 hour end of year party (Fri, 18th May from 2pm onwards in the SU Building and right outside) is going to be another corker! We’ve got a brilliant line up of big names playing and loads of fun all day and night with fairground rides, giant games, unbeatable drinks offers, the ever popular Bier Keller and much, much more! We hope to see as many of you as possible there and remember that your family and friends (whether they’re students or not) are more than welcome to join you on the day!

We’re also thrilled to be celebrating even more sporting success including the retention of the Tees Wear Varsity trophy and further league/ cup triumphs for our sports clubs. In addition we’re excited to have the chance to honour outstanding sports clubs, teams and individuals as well as the Student and Course Reps who have really shone this academic year at The Annual Awards in May, congrats to everyone nominated!

Finally, you may have already heard that students placed us 7th in the UK in the prestigious Times Higher Student Experience Survey 2018 but we couldn’t resist mentioning it again! It makes us the highest placed North East Students’ Union and caps a wonderful few weeks which also saw student feedback help us on to the shortlist for Students’ Union of the Year in the Whatuni Student Choice Awards 2018!

We’re delighted to be getting it right for so many of you, have a great month and make sure you keep the SU right at the heart of your student life! Make sure you say hi if you see us around!

Celebrating an amazing few months of sporting success!

The annual Tees Wear Varsity took place at the University of Sunderland on Wed, 21st March and, in a jam packed day of sporting clashes across a range of sports, TUSU triumphed by 10.5 to 8.5 points to retain the coveted trophy for another year.

It was yet more silverware after a sensational few months of sporting success for Teesside Uni clubs and teams along with Commonwealth Games glory for two current students and a recent graduate!

  • Law student, Paralympian and former TUSU Sportswoman of the Year Jade Jones-Hall picked up gold at the Commonwealth Games after competing in the Paratriathlon for England.
  • Civil and structural engineering student and cyclist Harry Tanfield won a Commonwealth Games silver medal for England in the Men’s Individual Time Trial. It was a welcome addition to his recent British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) gold and silver medals.
  • There was also more joy for Teesside Uni as recent graduate, former Elite Athlete, former Sportswoman of the Year and local swimming star Aimee Willmott picked up gold for England in the 400 Metres Individual Medley.
  • Our sports teams and clubs have already been busy picking up silverware with Women’s Football securing the British Universities and Colleges (BUCS) league title with a game in hand in February. The Netball Club quickly followed suit by winning their BUCS league, again with a game to spare and Men’s Hockey capped a superb season by going unbeaten to win their BUCS league in March. Teesside Uni Dance Club also excelled in their competition at the start of March with 14 trophies for their talented members!
  • Outstanding individual performances included student boxer Caine Singh collecting gold for Teesside University in the BUCS Boxing Championships at the end of February and Karina Le Fevre winning a BUCS bronze medal in the Individual Table Tennis Championships.

Amy Preston, President Activities said: “I couldn’t be prouder of or more grateful to all of the individuals who have won titles and trophies for Teesside Uni over the past few months. I also want to say a big thanks to everyone who has given up their valuable time to compete for us this year.”

“It was especially sweet to round things off by retaining the Tees Wear Varsity trophy and to have two current students plus a recent graduate winning medals at the Commonwealth Games is just amazing! They’re all obviously exceptional talents but I think it also underlines the ongoing success of the Elite Athlete Scheme the University runs given that they have all benefited from it. I’d urge people who think they have something special in the sporting arena to find out more about the support they can get next year!”

Students can also source support with their sporting ambitions from the Students’ Union sports bursary scheme.

Top landlords and letting agents honoured by students

TS1 Students, Kexgill Middlesbrough and Limetree Student Living have all triumphed at the Teesside University Students’ Union Housing Awards 2018.

The event, held in front of an invited audience on Tue 20th March, saw TS1 pick up the Best Overall Large Student Accommodation Provider title. Meanwhile, Kexgill was judged Best Overall Medium Sized Student Accommodation Provider and Limetree Student Living collected Best Overall Small Student Accommodation Provider.

All of the awards were decided by hundreds of responses to the annual Rate Your Landlord survey which invites students to give their landlord feedback across a range of criteria. Those who receive the highest ratings pick up the gongs.

Staff from TS1 Student Accommodation, Kexgill Middlesbrough, Limetree Student Living, Atha Developments, Fortis Student Living and Campus Lifestyle also picked up “Star Staff Member” prizes recognising their commitment to the very best customer service for student tenants.

Georgina Arksey, President Welfare at Teesside University Students’ Union, said: “The awards are not an endorsement of any of the winners by TUSU but they do reflect the feedback we’ve had from hundreds of students in our Rate Your Landlord Survey.

Our congratulations to all of the winners, it’s clear from the feedback we’ve received from students and our own dealings with them this past year that they are committed to providing the best possible accommodation to their tenants. We’ll be aiming to make our accreditation scheme for landlords and letting agents even bigger and better in 2018/19!”

Student Safety Tips

Teesside is, generally speaking, a great place for students to live where you’ll find you’re made very welcome! However, it’s always important to think about your personal safety/ wellbeing and the ways that you can minimise the risk of being affected by crime. Here’s a few handy tips from the Students’ Union.

  • If you’re going to be living in rented accommodation ensure it has a working smoke alarm, carbon monoxide detector and up to date gas safety certificate. Contact your landlord or letting agent immediately if you notice any issues.
  • Try to keep your valuables securely locked away and out of sight when you’re heading and always ensures windows and doors are properly locked.
  • Try to avoid cooking at home if you’re very tired or you’ve returned from a late night out and consumed a lot of alcohol.
  • Try to get to know the area as well as possible and know the places to avoid, also stay in groups and well lit areas after dark wherever possible.
  • Cleveland Police advise caution when engaging with beggars on the street and ask that you don’t give them money as it often only worsens their problems and makes it hard for support workers to help them.
  • Uni is a time for making lots of new friends but try to fully get to know people before you’re alone or intimate with them.
  • Be mindful of possible drink spiking when on nights out, never leaves drinks unattended and only leave them in the care of people you know and trust.
  • Drink alcohol responsibly, avoid mixing drinks and NEVER drink and drive!
  • We strongly advise against using illegal drugs…you’re risking prosecution and they can be very dangerous especially if supplied by someone you don’t know.
  • Remember you can speak to Cleveland Police regularly here in the SU Building if you have any concerns about your safety or just want crime prevention advice/ freebies. Dates and times when they’ll be in are published across our social media and tees-su.org.uk/daytime.
  • We run many campaign days around student safety published on our social media and tees-su.org.uk/events while we have a dedicated student safety web section tees-su.org.uk/safety.
