The annual Tees Wear Varsity took place at the University of Sunderland on Wed, 21st March and, in a jam packed day of sporting clashes across a range of sports, TUSU triumphed by 10.5 to 8.5 points to retain the coveted trophy for another year.
It was yet more silverware after a sensational few months of sporting success for Teesside Uni clubs and teams along with Commonwealth Games glory for two current students and a recent graduate!
Amy Preston, President Activities said: “I couldn’t be prouder of or more grateful to all of the individuals who have won titles and trophies for Teesside Uni over the past few months. I also want to say a big thanks to everyone who has given up their valuable time to compete for us this year.”
“It was especially sweet to round things off by retaining the Tees Wear Varsity trophy and to have two current students plus a recent graduate winning medals at the Commonwealth Games is just amazing! They’re all obviously exceptional talents but I think it also underlines the ongoing success of the Elite Athlete Scheme the University runs given that they have all benefited from it. I’d urge people who think they have something special in the sporting arena to find out more about the support they can get next year!”
Students can also source support with their sporting ambitions from the Students’ Union sports bursary scheme.
The Students’ Union Annual Awards, which takes place on Wednesday, 2nd May this year here in The Hub, are always one of the most exciting and memorable events of the year. We’ll honour outstanding sports clubs, teams and individual sporting performances as well as the student reps who have really gone the extra mile at a glittering event and there’ll be live coverage across our social media on the night plus a highlights video soon after.
However, nothing beats being there! Tickets are on sale now for just £30 and the price includes a delicious three course meal and massive after party! There’s more info, a full list of nominees and highlights of our recent Societies Awards at tees-su.org.uk/awards.
The event is in association with Dominos Middlesbrough, Geonet Solutions and Kexgill Middlesbrough, we thank them all for their support!
We’re an SU that’s committed to running campaigns which are relevant to the day to day issues all students face and make a positive difference to every student’s life.
We continue to focus on housing, acceptable behaviour and language, safety, managing stress, course related issues and employability plus much more. You can also chat to Tom (President Education) and Georgina (President Welfare) if you have any educational or welfare related issues in their Friendly Faces sessions.
Before the end of the academic year your Student Officers will also be around campus listening to your feedback about your student experience and handing out free fruit and water while you work! We’ve also got help with managing exam and assignment deadline stress.

TS1 Students, Kexgill Middlesbrough and Limetree Student Living have all triumphed at the Teesside University Students’ Union Housing Awards 2018.
The event, held in front of an invited audience on Tue 20th March, saw TS1 pick up the Best Overall Large Student Accommodation Provider title. Meanwhile, Kexgill was judged Best Overall Medium Sized Student Accommodation Provider and Limetree Student Living collected Best Overall Small Student Accommodation Provider.
All of the awards were decided by hundreds of responses to the annual Rate Your Landlord survey which invites students to give their landlord feedback across a range of criteria. Those who receive the highest ratings pick up the gongs.
Staff from TS1 Student Accommodation, Kexgill Middlesbrough, Limetree Student Living, Atha Developments, Fortis Student Living and Campus Lifestyle also picked up “Star Staff Member” prizes recognising their commitment to the very best customer service for student tenants.
Georgina Arksey, President Welfare at Teesside University Students’ Union, said: “The awards are not an endorsement of any of the winners by TUSU but they do reflect the feedback we’ve had from hundreds of students in our Rate Your Landlord Survey.
Our congratulations to all of the winners, it’s clear from the feedback we’ve received from students and our own dealings with them this past year that they are committed to providing the best possible accommodation to their tenants. We’ll be aiming to make our accreditation scheme for landlords and letting agents even bigger and better in 2018/19!”

Calling final year students! There’s just a week left to have your say about your experience! The National Student Survey (NSS) is one of the biggest student surveys around and it closes at the end of April! It’s an important chance for final year students to tell Teesside Uni and the SU where we got it right and the places where you think we need to improve for future students.
To encourage you to complete the survey, Teesside University is offering the following prize: 1 x £1,500 discount off full-time, further study at the Teesside University main campus in 2018/19 to be awarded randomly to a student who enters the online survey prize draw before midnight on 30 April 2018. A cash alternative of £500 can be substituted for the prize.
There’s also a great opportunity to win a VIP reception during Graduation Week for you and your coursemates if everyone completes it! Check out full details of the current leaderboard at tees-su.org.uk/nss.
The winners will be notified by email from Tina Hannon, Executive PA to the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Learning & Teaching) on 11th May 2018.The results will be announced on the University website by 18th May 2018.
Teesside is, generally speaking, a great place for students to live where you’ll find you’re made very welcome! However, it’s always important to think about your personal safety/ wellbeing and the ways that you can minimise the risk of being affected by crime. Here’s a few handy tips from the Students’ Union.
