Student Safety

Teesside is, generally speaking, a safe and friendly place and students are made to feel very welcome with the vast majority thoroughly enjoying their time living and studying here. However, the SU and some of our partner agencies still appreciate the importance of helping students to minimise any risks they might face and this page details the many ways we, collectively, try to help keep students safe. We've also got details of some of the practical steps students themselves can take to keep safe and crime free!

Safe spaces in cental Middlesbrough

Working in partnership with a range of organisations - ‘Safe Spaces’ is a service for students where they can seek help and refuge if needed. Businesses that take part in this scheme can be easily identified by the yellow ‘Safe Spaces’ stickers in their windows.

This service is for students who feel threatened or vulnerable and they can expect to be given somewhere to sit for a short period of time, first aid (if needed) and a taxi can be rung for them. Businesses can enquire at the SU about becoming one of our ‘Premium Safe Spaces’ by e-mailing:

Help available on campus

Campus Security can be contacted on 01642 342086 or by calling in to the Security Office next to the library. They can offer you a physical or CCTV escort across campus if you are feeling vulnerable and you can report any issues to them directly.

Venue staff at the SU - The SU is dedicated to making our premises the safest possible for our Students. All venue staff are either SIA Door Supervisor qualified or working towards their qualification. Due to the hard work our venue staff carry out we have won the gold ‘Best Bar None’ award.
