Welcome from the Student Officers

A very warm welcome to the first of this year's monthly updates from Teesside University Students' Union (TUSU). We get in touch every month with all the latest news and events from TUSU unless you ask us to stop by unsubscribing.

This edition is, as you would probably expect, dominated by the activities, events, and support available to ALL Teesside Uni students over the Freshers period and then throughout the academic year. Check out the next article for the full low down on Freshers. We hope whatever time you can spare, you take the time to sample at least some of what's on offer in the coming weeks; we would love to see you in our building opposite The Curve and next to Teesside University Library!

Alongside Freshers, we've got a look ahead to the campaign work we have planned for Semester 1 and a summary of other day and evening events you can get involved in. There's also important advice on all aspects of accommodation and top tips for staying safe whether you're new to Uni life or back for more!

Have a great month, and make sure TUSU is right at the heart of YOUR student life! And if you see the three of us around campus, make sure you tell us how your student life is going. We need your feedback to do our jobs well!

Campaigns Corner

We are a Students' Union who pride ourselves on running "real world" campaigns that focus on the issues of most importance to Teesside University students. In Semester 1, this will include:

  • Gathering feedback on student experiences of accommodation and providing support to students with this important issue.
  • Giving you opportunities to speak to the Student Officers and other representatives of TUSU in person or online about your student experience through Talk to TUSU and tees-su.org.uk/feedback.
  • Providing advice and support with the important and often misunderstood issue of academic misconduct.
  • Giving students the chance to speak to each other and get/give mutual support at weekly Students Supporting Students sessions.
  • Much, much more besides!

Find out more through tees-su.org.uk/officers and keep an eye on tees-su.org.uk/events or our social media channels for details of upcoming campaign dates.

Welcome from your School and Course Reps

Hello and welcome to our new and returning students. We are your School Representatives for the 23/24 academic year. We are a team of 18 current students employed by the Students' Union to represent each school across the University. Ultimately, we want to enhance your experience at Teesside. We work with senior staff within our schools to help enhance the teaching and learning, facilities, and overall student experience. We also signpost students to relevant services across the University.

Last year, we helped students with technical issues, re-enrolment enquiries, timetable changes and access issues. We have also signposted students to a range of services, from IT to disability services. If you are also interested in representation, there may be a chance for you to become a Course Representative and join the team! Course Reps deal with course-related concerns to improve the experience for their cohort and future students. All you need to do is speak to your Course Leader, who will hold a class election. If you are selected for the role, you will then fill out a Course Rep nomination form, and the SU will contact you with an invite to training. We would love to work with you, so enquire with your Course Leader today!

We want to hear your feedback, including success stories, positive comments and issues or concerns. You can contact us via email, Facebook, or Instagram by attending one of our drop-in sessions or catching us on campus; we wear black hoodies.

We look forward to working with you this academic year and hope to hear from you soon.

Student Safety Tips

Your SU works closely with the University and a range of external agencies such as Cleveland Police, Cleveland Fire and the NHS to try to keep all students safe and well. It remains important to keep taking sensible precautions to minimise the risk to both yourself and other students.

Check out our tips for staying over the freshers period and throughout semester one.

  • If you are living in student accommodation, make sure you always remember to lock windows and doors when you head out securely.
  • Try to keep anything particularly valuable out of sight when you leave your student house.
  • If you find that the property you are living in does not have a fire, carbon monoxide and burglar alarms or an up-to-date gas certificate, speak to your letting agent or landlord immediately. You can also get online help with accommodation issues through our SU Student Support team by e-mailing: suss@tees-su.org.uk.
  • If you are new to Middlesbrough or Teesside, try to stay in well-lit areas and groups when you head out after dark. Fellow students can also probably give useful advice on areas of the town that you may wish to avoid.
  • Drink responsibly and avoid illegal drugs, especially if they are being supplied by someone you do not know. NEVER DRINK/ TAKE DRUGS AND THEN DRIVE!
  • Be aware of possible drink spiking, especially if you are in unfamiliar venues with new people.
  • Middlesbrough Council has strict rules on behaviour in public, especially in the town centre. Please be aware that if you are deemed to have behaved unacceptably in public spaces, you may face a fine of several hundred pounds.
  • Like any UK town, Middlesbrough, sadly, has issues with begging in the town centre. Cleveland Police and Middlesbrough Council advise you not to give money to people who ask for it and avoid lengthy engagement with people who beg, especially if they are aggressive. A range of support is available from professional agencies for people who are in these situations; assisting them should be left to the experts.
