Societies Handbook - Introduction

🎉 Welcome to the Societies Handbook! 🎉

Hey! First off, welcome (or welcome back) to uni life – you're in for an amazing ride. This little handbook is all about societies and how they can seriously level up your time here. If you’re wondering what they are, why you should care, or how to get involved, you’re in the right place.

💡 So… What is a Society?

Think of a society as a group of students who are into the same thing – it could be anything from music, gaming, or dance, to debating, culture, or even cheese (yes, that exists!). Some are chill and just about having fun, and others are more active or focused – but they’re all run by students like you.

📘 What’s This Handbook For?

This is your go-to guide for all things society-related. Whether you want to join one, start one, or run one, this will walk you through the basics – how to get involved, plan events, apply for funding, and just generally make the most of it. We’ve tried to keep it simple and helpful so you’re not left guessing.

🗣️ A Quick Word from the SU Presidents

Hey everyone,

We just want to say how excited we are to have you with us this year.

Societies are a huge part of student life – they’re where I made my best mates and had some of my favourite memories.
Seriously, getting involved changed my uni experience for the better. Whether you’re here to try something new or dive deeper into something you already love, there’s a place for you.

And if you don’t see a society that fits? Start your own – we’ve got your back!

See you around,

Harsha, Ebubechi and Blessing

🤔 Why Bother Joining a Society?

Because uni isn’t just about lectures and deadlines – it’s about making memories, trying new things, and finding your people. Societies are the easiest way to do all of that. You’ll meet people outside your course, learn stuff you won’t find in a classroom, and probably have a few good nights out along the way.
Plus, it looks pretty great on your CV (bonus!).
